Andropause
– Male Menopause
Andropause is the time in a man's life when his hormones
naturally start to decline. The gradual decline usually begins
during their late forties or early fifties. This decline continues
into the eighties and beyond. Andropause is a gradual process and
not exactly the same as menopause. However, like women undergoing
menopause, the decline in hormones in men results in men also
suffering from symptoms of declining hormones
Andropause usually begins between the ages of 50 to 70. Men
begin to report symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, general
tiredness, mood changes, night sweats and sometimes heart
palpitations. Most men attribute erectile dysfunction to be the most
significant symptom of Andropause. Many men have also complained of
nervousness, irritability and even depression. A man aged between 15
to 30 years has testosterone level at an all time high then drops to
the ebb during the Andropause. Young men often have testosterone
levels exceeding 1000ng/dl. Compare this with 80 year-old men, whose
average testosterone is 200ng/dl.
A man experiencing Andropause is experiencing a drop in
testosterone up to 80%.
Hormone Replacement Therapy - Fortunately, through the now
acceptable use of Hormone Replacement Therapy for men, most of the
symptoms men experience due to loss of testosterone can be
alleviated.
Your Doctor can perform tests to determine if you have
